Who We Are

Members of the Academic Optometry Society are optometrists or vision scientists who currently hold an academic appointment. We have 12 liaisons overseeing our 12 academic sections and optometric, as well as surgical, advisory committees devoted to optometric excellence.

 

 

What We Do

Our mission is to establish a collaborative network of clinicians, scientists, and researchers to promote clinical excellence, research advancement and collegiality among the optometric community. 

Our Board

Y. Shira Kresch, OD, MS, FAAO

founder

Y. Shira Kresch OD, MS, FAAO is a primary care optometrist who specializes in the non-surgical treatment and management of glaucoma as well as myopia control. After obtaining her BS in Nutrition and Food Science from Wayne State University Honors College with a co-major in University Honors, she received her OD/MS degrees from the State University of New York and completed her residency in primary care and ocular disease at the NY VA Harbor Healthcare System under the supervision of Dr. Murray Fingeret and Dr. Evan Canellos. Following residency, Dr. Kresch underwent further training with Dr. Jeffrey Liebmann and Dr. Jack Cioffi in the glaucoma service at Columbia University Medical Center where she is currently an Instructor of Optometric Sciences in Ophthalmology and the clinic lead of the myopia control clinic. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Kresch pursues research in the areas of early detection of glaucoma and technological advances in patient education.

Richard J. Madonna, OD, MA, FAAO

Chief Advisor

Dr. Madonna is Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Education and Director of the Office of Continuing Professional Education at the SUNY College of Optometry. Clinically, his practice at the College’s University Eye Center is limited to glaucoma. He lectures nationally and internationally on glaucoma and ophthalmic imaging.  Among many professional activities, he currently serves as Vice President of the Optometric Glaucoma Society.  He has received a number of awards, most recently the American Academy of Optometry’s 2017 Vincent Ellerbrock Clinician-Educator Award. Dr. Madonna was formerly Director of the Optometric Residency Program at the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System and Chief of the Optometry Section at the VA Medical Center in Castle Point, New York.
